A New Chapter at Jericho

Jericho High School welcomes its newest addition to the English department, Ms. Diana Vlavianos, who is teaching English I and AP Composition.

Ms. Vlavianos studied at Providence College as an English and Creative Writing major for her undergraduate education. She then obtained her master’s degree at New York University.

Prior to working at Jericho, Ms. Vlavianos taught at various schools in Queens, Brooklyn and Long Island. “I learned so much about teaching and how to engage students in the city, and I think that I can bring that here in a different way,” she said.

Growing up on Long Island, Ms. Vlavianos was well aware of Jericho’s impressive academic culture. She said, “You guys are top-tier. You’re exceptional, and you live up to that reputation.”

Ms. Vlavianos also admires her students’ wide range of interests and abilities. “You’re all so amazing and well-rounded,” she added.

Her desire to teach began with her high school English teacher. “She inspired me so much, and she made me love Shakespeare and learning,” she said.

Ms. Vlavianos seems to have the same effect on her students. Freshman Zain H. said, “She’s very knowledgeable in English, and she knows how to connect with students very well.”

Ms. Vlavianos patiently helps her student, freshman Farhan B., with his assignment.

English Curriculum Associate Dr. Dan Salzman appreciates Ms. Vlavianos’ creative and thoughtful teaching approach. “I think that she brings care and compassion to the classroom as well as a desire to amplify her students’ voices,” said Dr. Salzman.

Outside of school, Ms. Vlavianos can be found playing with her 2-year-old daughter Margot. She also enjoys spending time outdoors, and loves to hike and attend concerts in her free time.
