A New Yet Familiar Face

By SARA ZIMMERMAN

Along with the freshman class, Mr. Konstantine Kovoros has transitioned from being a Jericho Middle School veteran to a new member of the high school.

One of Mr. Kovoros’s inspirations for becoming an educator was his social studies teacher Mr. Costello. Mr. Kovoros said, “He was just such an interesting guy–such an enthusiastic guy–and always looked like he really enjoyed teaching. I enjoyed his class a lot.”

Mr. Kovoros values his job as a social studies teacher at Jericho for a couple of reasons. He said, “I really do enjoy the curriculum. I like talking about American history, but I like working with kids and presenting new ideas and concepts and having them kind of grapple with them. It’s nice when you see a kid make a connection to understand something. It’s very powerful.”

Mr. Kovoros has worked as a social studies teacher in the Jericho school district for many years, and has always thought very highly of the district and the community. Mr. Kovoros said, “I thought that the kids were great, I liked the staff, I liked the culture of the school, so it was a place I wanted to be.”

Mr. Kovoros has noticed many differences when teaching in the high school and teaching in the middle school. He said, “I see dramatic changes physically, like the kids are a lot taller and, you know, bigger. But also intellectually, a lot of the kids are more mature. Each building is great, but even though we’re part of the same district, they have their own different vibe.”

Curriculum Associate for Social Studies, Business and Libraries Dr. Sundberg believes that Mr. Kovoros will be an important asset to Jericho High School. “I’ve already known him for 18 years and he was absolutely the most important person to take the high school spot,” said Dr. Sundberg.

Junior Rachel L. enjoys Mr. Kovoros’s class and believes that he truly puts effort into his teaching. She said, “I think he’s a very nice teacher and he’s very patient with all of his students. He makes sure that everyone works up to their full capability, and he really checks up on everyone.”

Mr. Kovoros uses graphics and other interactive media to engage his American History students.

Some interests and hobbies of Mr. Kovoros include bike riding, watching sports, spending time with his family and watching movies. He also has a pet dog named Teddy.

Mr. Kovoros feels very fortunate to be able to work in the Jericho School District and is excited about his new journey as a high school teacher.

  1. Goated teacher. I remember when I had him for 8th-grade social studies. As a sophomore in college, he made me love social studies.
