Jericho’s fall spirit week and Homecoming were a blast for high school students and staff. Take a look at some of these incredible pictures to relive the festivities!
On pajama day, students and teachers got out of bed and came right to school. Dressed in sleepwear and accessories, pajama day was a great kick off to spirit week. Sophomore Allie L. said, “I wore my favorite pajama set and received compliments from many teachers.” It was a very fun way for everyone to show off their favorite pajamas and a great excuse to come to school in your comfiest clothes.
The first ever twin day was an absolute success. “It was so fun! I loved matching with my friends,” said senior Sherry Z. Students walked into school dressed in a wide range of clothing. Some students stuck to their own style but kept it fun by matching a simple skirt with their friend, while others went above and beyond to match their whole outfit, hair, accessories, and makeup. We even saw an appearance of rainbow colored dinosaur onesies! Many students gladly took this opportunity to change up their everyday school style and express their unique friendships.
There was plenty of plaid in the hallways on Western Wednesday! Students showed off their best Western wear and it was a great way to see all students come together during spirit week. Sophomore Casey D. said, “It was so fun seeing everyone dress in western clothing. This was a great way to promote school spirit!”
“Throwback Thursday” was a blast from the past at Jericho High School. Students and teachers dressed up for the penultimate day of spirit week 2021. The halls were filled with smiling faces and costumes representing all decades. Sophomore Alex D. said, “I was able to show my creativity with an outfit from the early 2000s.” From Juicy Couture to the Founding Fathers, Throwback Thursday was a major hit!
Students came together to celebrate Spirit Day, supporting Jericho’s colors of yellow and blue. The hallways were full of pride and smiles, with students and faculty bonding over representing their school. This was the proper sendoff to Spirit Week, and hopefully it will be just as much of a success in the future. Junior Vir G. said, “It was a fun experience to see everyone supporting our school. It was cool to see people actually participating in spirit.”
Students were dismissed from classes early on Friday for a new spin on the annual Homecoming Pep Rally. Members of various sports teams, as well as the Jericho mascot, ran through the school holding up brightly colored posters and waving to the bystanders lining the hallways. Shouts and cheers were all one could hear as students spotted their friends in the parade. Spirits were high for the start of a weekend full of sporting events and activities.
The traditional homecoming dance was replaced this year with an outdoor party. Students were able to bond with their friends during the Under the Stars Event. Numerous activities were offered during the night, including carnival games, dessert trucks and dancing. The food available was a big hit. Sophomore Nelson L. said, “One of my favorites tonight is the frozen yogurt.”
Despite the homecoming football game being played at Plainview High School, the Jericho fans still attended and brought their spirit to the bleachers. Jericho High School senior tight end Gavin S. emphasized the value of our students’ spirit and how it positively impacts their playing. He said, “It is amazing to see The Nest come out and cheer for us when we play. It is more fun and exhilarating to see and hear the love from our friends.” Even though the football team lost, Jericho students remained encouraging throughout the game.
Students and community members filled The Nest to support the boys varsity soccer team in their homecoming game. Fans were not disappointed, as Jericho defeated Great Neck North in thrilling fashion, coming back from a 2-1 deficit in the closing minutes of the game. Goals from seniors Adriano G., Luke C., and freshman Dylan C. helped propel the Jayhawks to a 3-2 victory.
The girls varsity soccer team faced a challenging opponent, Bethpage High School, for their annual homecoming soccer game. The players on both sides put up a great fight and the atmosphere of the field was overwhelmingly positive. Freshman Madison K. had an amazing goal during the first half, but Jericho was ultimately defeated by Bethpage, losing 4-1. Despite the loss, the team embraced the joyful homecoming atmosphere and held their heads up high. Many of the girls continued to support their fellow Jayhawks after the game, joining The Nest and participating in homecoming festivities.
The girls swimming team competed against Long Beach, East Meadow, and Port Washington in a meet on Saturday. Jericho finished in second place, falling 40 points short of Port Washington’s 131. Sophomore Kiran J. said, “Overall I think we had a pretty great meet. Going in we were nervous, especially since we hadn’t had a meet in 2 years, but a lot of girls got personal and season bests which is always a good feeling.” It was a great return to normalcy as students and swimmers alike are thrilled to have swim meets back at Jericho.
The boys varsity badminton team added another win as they defeated Great Neck North. The team gave their full effort showing their determination and drive, allowing them to secure their victory. Senior captain Wesley W. said, “Complete domination. There’s a reason why we’ve been county champions for the last 4 years.”
The girls varsity volleyball team rivaled Valley Stream South in an exciting match. After a long and hard fight, they were defeated. The girls fought extremely hard, to the point where senior and captain Claire M. ended up slammed against the gym wall, trying to save a point. But not to fear, she got right back up and played the very next point. The Nest was as big as ever, with their section of the stands being filled completely.
It’s so nice seeing the students enjoying a great homecoming week in-person after remote learning last year!
