A Change in Tempo: Meet the New Assistant Principal

By DAVID CHESS and CHERIE MA

Formerly a familiar face as the Curriculum Associate for Fine & Performing Arts, Dr. Behr has recently taken on the role of the Assistant Principal of Jericho Senior High School and Middle School. After 4 years in the district, she is undoubtedly passionate about making Jericho a better place and giving students the best education possible.

Before moving to Long Island, Dr. Behr taught orchestra in Fayetteville-Manlius, a school district in Syracuse. She then took a teaching position in East Meadow, and transitioned into an administrative position there before joining Jericho. She said, “I see people stepping up to make sure that I have what I need, and I feel very supported. I hope that I’m conveying the same message, that we’re here to support everyone.”

Ever since she was in high school, music’s creativity has been something important to Dr. Behr. She has played the violin since she was 8 years old, playing chamber music in quartets throughout her school days. At the start of high school, she conducted sectionals and even mentored others. “Hearing improvement based on my feedback and sharing my love of music with others inspired me to study music education,” she said.

She also believes that the connection between teachers and students is valuable. “It makes students more open to learning and experimenting within the subject area,” she said.

Dr. Behr loves the ambition of Jericho’s students and believes that they will go on to do great things. “I can’t wait to hear about your accomplishments,” she said.

Dr. Behr received her education at Syracuse University, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and a Master’s degree in Music Education and Violin Performance. In addition, she earned certificates for School Building Leader and School District Leader at the College of Saint Rose and has recently completed her Doctorate in Administration and Supervision.

In her free time, Dr. Behr enjoys spending time with her dogs, Lucy and Otto. She is an avid reader who also loves to travel. “As soon as we’re able to, I can’t wait to start traveling again,” she said.

Dr. Behr troubleshoots the auditorium stage lights after responding to a reported problem.

Dr. Behr’s best piece of advice for students is to find what they are passionate about. She said, “Really focus on one thing. Get really good at one thing. It’s great to be well-rounded, but you can’t be amazing at every single thing. So find what you like and pursue that passion.”
