Tobi Taking Off

Have you watched Jericho’s dance group, The Jayettes, perform at soccer or basketball games? If you have, you probably saw senior Tobi Ajah dancing with energy and attitude. Coach and teammates agree that Tobi is a great asset to the team as a captain and 4-year member.

Tobi started dancing her freshman year of high school. She joined the team to take advantage of the new opportunities that the high school offered. She said, “I really wanted to expand my horizons. It was available. I love dance and I wanted to make it my hobby.” In addition, Tobi realized other benefits of dancing. “Dance is a stress reliever and it’s also very fun to me. I enjoy doing all types of dance,” she said.

Tobi is very passionate about the dance team. “What I love most is the community that it builds, the fun and the collaboration,” she said.

Aside from Jayettes, Tobi is an active member of various other organizations. “I work with a team of leaders for National Honor Society, and we all have different roles to contribute to the success of the club.” Tobi also volunteers with Uplift, where she does community service in Nigeria.

As the Jayettes captain, Tobi has many responsibilities. She said she is always “expecting precision and making sure everybody’s at practice on time, at the games ready and respecting the dress code.”

Jayettes Coach Casey Naab believes Tobi is a great role model. “With her outgoing personality and eagerness to do well, Tobi brings such good energy to the team,” she said. Senior co-captain Kyra H. agrees. She said, “Tobi brings personality, and she makes the team a lot more fun and enjoyable for everyone.”

Unfortunately, this is Tobi’s final year on the team. However, her dance career might not be over. She said, “I will definitely continue to dance in the future.” She hopes that the remaining Jayettes members put in a lot of hard work. “I always believe that I lead by example, so I hope that they do what I did during my time as captain,” she said.
