As the 2019 comes to a close, we take a look back on some of The JerEcho’s highlights from the final year of the decade.
We started the year off celebrating Jericho’s administrators who participated in “No Shave November” and took a trip down memory lane as we revisited a JerEcho print newspaper from 1965.
In February a JerEcho reporter connected the book “The Hate you Give” to her own life. We also spent 36 hours traveling around Jericho, finding the most popular spots and also the hidden gems.
Come March we heard a personal account of what Jericho High School was like in the 1960’s and highlighted the new student commentating program at varsity basketball games.
Time for the JerUh-Oh! In April, the students created their best satire videos to celebrate April Fool’s day.
As the AP exams piled on in May, students enjoyed the addition of the new yoga class to relax. Also, in collaboration with Uniondale and Southside High Schools, Jericho students learned to encourage unity across different ethnicities and cultures.
In June, we welcomed the students from Chile who came to experience life at an American high school, and we honored the life of a very special man in the Jericho community, Mr. Ratner. We miss him every day.
September called for taking to the streets of New York City to advocate for environmental awareness. Change also occurred on a more local level with the nonprofit organization Dancing Dreams.
A month into school, students were already missing out on sleep due to workload and their cellphones. However, our two soccer captains were always well rested to bring victory to their respected teams.
In November, we celebrated our annual Homecoming Dance, pep rally, and color run. Also, students who participated in the Canon Solutions America Future Authors Project “became recognized,” as they were inspired my Michelle Obama’s memoir.
As the year drew to an end, we rejoiced over the boys varsity soccer team’s state championship win, but the seasons changed, and so did the sports. Tensions arise between Knicks and Nets fans who debate over which will be the dominant New York team.
The JerEcho had a great 2019, and we look forward to all that will come in 2020!
